Human resources convention to focus on labor laws

SHRM logoThe Puerto Rico Society for Human Resources Management will be hosting its annual convention Sept. 18-21, focusing on labor laws and the new competency model for HR professionals. This year’s gathering is the trade group’s 40th on the island.

“The annual SHRM-PR conference has always been known for its extensive and serious educational program and this year is no exception,” said Katherine Padilla, conference committee director.

The educational track will kick off Wednesday, including a number of plenary sessions and a keynote speech by John Foley, Blue Angels pilot and an adviser to Fortune 500 corporations, who will discuss how to take complex challenges and make them relevant, simple and actionable.

The program will extend through Friday, with a number of local and international speakers, including Alexander Alonso, who will discuss the topic of  “The HR Professional Competency Model: A Roadmap for Success. His presentation will be followed by concurrent sessions focusing on legal considerations of retirement plans in divorce and death, HR answers to investment questions, among other industry-related topics.

“As always, we focus on our conference serving as a meeting point for colleagues, but also as a center for dissemination of knowledge of how we manage our people to increase productivity in organizations where we work,” said Iraida Ojeda, president of SHRM-PR. “This also benefits Puerto Rico’s economy since at the end of the dAY, the employees are the most important part of the companies without whom we could not function as a business.”

The SHRM-PR will wrap up this year’s gathering with its annual assembly for members on Saturday.
