CBP will increase number of agents in Puerto Rico
An unspecified number of new CPB agents will be assigned to Puerto Rico airports in the next 12 to 18 months.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which is part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, will increase the number of agents in Puerto Rico and other jurisdictions by hiring a total of 2,000 additional agents, Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration Executive Director Juan E. Hernández announced.
The exact number that will be assigned to the island was not specified.
The job openings authorized under the 2014 federal budget allow for the expansion of customs services and the amount of personnel hired is determined through the workload staffing model, which identifies the areas or ports with most necessity of additional personnel.
These resources will be directed to airports and it is estimated that it will take 12 to 18 months for the new agents, the agency said.
“This effort is a product of the excellent relationship our administration has established with DHS and is related to our continuous efforts to improve security and addressing the necessity to increase and improve services in our ports. Without a doubt, these agents that will be assigned to Puerto Rico, will improve the efficiency of the process and security in our airports,” Hernández said.
