JetBlue Airways announced Wednesday that its new nonstop “capital-to-capital” service from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport will begin Aug. 23, 2012.

The announcement comes a week after the carrier was granted a “beyond-perimeter slot exemption” from the U.S. Department of Transportation to launch this new long-distance flight.

JetBlue’s new flights will be the only nonstop service between Washington D.C.’s downtown airport and the island, and JetBlue’s 14th destination from San Juan. It will operate from JetBlue’s exclusive new ‘home’ in Terminal A at LMM, where it will move in this summer.

“We’re very excited to launch this new service between two major capital cities and two key markets in the JetBlue network,” said Rob Land, senior vice president of government affairs and associate general counsel at JetBlue. “The ability to provide this much-needed service between D.C. and San Juan is a long-sought opportunity we’re happy to be able to offer thanks to the DOT and the many individuals, companies and public officials in Puerto Rico and the mainland who supported our application for this exciting new service.”

“JetBlue has long been focused on expanding its footprint in the Puerto Rico market, where we’re the largest airline today, and growing our presence at Reagan National. We expect this new route to fulfill our customers’ needs while providing them with low fares, an outstanding product and our unique brand of customer service,” he added.

JetBlue’s proposed schedule between Washington D.C. and San Juan is as follows: Washington D.C. to San Juan departing at 8:50 a.m. and arriving 12:34 p.m., San Juan to Washington D.C. departing at 5:55 p.m. and arriving stateside at 9:44 p.m.
