‘Malta’ maker recalls dozens of bottles sold in P.R. over injury risk

Half a dozen brands of 'malta,' including Malta Polar, sold in 7-ounce glass bottles are part of Florida Brewery's mass recall.

Half a dozen brands of non-alcoholic “malta” drink have been included in a mass recall by Florida Brewery Inc., which late Wednesday urged the return of some 30 lots of 7-oz bottles because the exterior glass may break when the twist-off cap is removed, possibly resulting in cuts to the mouth.

The recall includes Goya, Great Value, Hatuey, Mr. Special, Polar, and SuperMax brand “malta” beverages sold in Puerto Rico and several other stateside markets from Dec. 8, 2011 to Feb. 1, 2012.

To date, the company based in Auburndale, Fla. has received two reports of consumers who were injured. The company did not reveal where the customers reside.

“The Florida Brewery learned of this issue from consumer reports and initiated an investigation,” the company said in a brief statement issued late Wednesday. “The company’s investigation continues and it is taking steps to ensure that all appropriate measures are taken.”

It is not clear how many of the defective bottles the company distributed of the non-alcoholic, carbonated malt drink brewed from barley, hops, and water.

The list of lot codes is as follows: Goya, 12/01/13, 12/08/13, 12/27/13, 12/28/13, 12/29/13, 01/06/13; Great Value, 01/05/13, 01/06/13; Hatuey, 12/21/13, 12/22/13, 01/06/13, 01/07/13; Mr. Special, 11/30/13, 12/01/13, 12/08/13, 12/09/13; Polar, 11/30/12, 12/22/12, 12/23/12, 12/29/12, 12/30/12, 01/03/13, 01/04/13; and Supermax, 12/09/13.

Consumers who bought and have products with any of the lot numbers listed should return them to the place of purchase for either a full refund, product replacement, coupon or product credit, the company said.

Furthermore, The Florida Brewery urged consumers to call its consumer hotline at 1-866-872-8860 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. eastern standard time, and weekends between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. eastern standard time for additional details on the recall and the product return process.
