2 UPR-Mayagüez students to participate in IBM contest

Two information technology students from the University of Puerto Rico’s Mayagüez Campus will join a select group of competitors from 23 countries around the globe that will take part in the IBM Master the Mainframe World Championship a first-of-its-kind, premiere enterprise computing competition.
Cristina Santana and Emmanuelle Vargas will compete in a series of challenges at this invitational event, which culminates on April 7 at IBM in New York City.
The competition gathers next-generation mainframe all-stars: 43 regional contest winners out of 20,000 contestants, who have demonstrated superior programming skills on the mainframe and have been selected to compete on the world stage, the company said.
Winners will be announced April 8, during the 50th anniversary of the IBM mainframe.
“Cristina and Emmanuelle are the are a vivid example of the most important competitive advantage that Puerto Rico has,” said Antonio Medina-Comas, executive director of the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company.
“These two young students represent the best of our human capital and reveal to the world that Puerto Rico, along with partners such as IBM, is ready to take the lead in the computer industry, providing trained human capital that companies today need,” he said.
