As part of its commitment to the environment and sustainable development, Arcos Dorados, the company that manages the McDonald’s brand in Latin America and the Caribbean, recently inaugurated the chain’s first ecological restaurant operating in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

The new restaurant, which created 90 jobs, is located in Plaza Guaynabo and opened to the public in late December. Among other eco-friendly elements, it features renewable technologies and practices that are estimated will reduce water consumption by 20 percent and energy by between 8 percent and 10 percent.

“Arcos Dorados, which operates the McDonald’s brand in Puerto Rico has been working to implement initiatives that support the environment and achieve greater efficiency in the use of natural resources,” said Nelson Colon, CFO of Arcos Dorados, Caribbean Division. “This effort has allowed the opening of the first ecological McDonald’s restaurant in Puerto Rico and Caribbean that also will be seeking LEED certification.”

The Plaza Guaynabo restaurant joins other ecological restaurants in the chain already certified by the U.S. Green Building Council operating in: Saõ Paulo (Brazil), Pilar (Argentina), Lindora (Costa Rica) and Sunken Park (Mexico) , as well as the company’s corporate university “Hamburger University” in Saõ Paulo.

The new facility will accommodate approximately 120 guests, ample parking space, drive-through, as well as PlayPlace and McCafé services.
