With an innovative technique for conserving water resources, MillerCoors employees and volunteers have created an alliance with the San Juan Bay Estuary Program to create a “Stormwater Garden” in the Condado Lagoon.

The initiative carried out under MillerCoors’ “Water Stewardship” program is important in restoring the Bay of San Juan’s ecosystem.

“This project is an excellent example of how we can contribute to the environment. It is our seventh consecutive year working with the San Juan Bay Estuary Program in the conservation of water resources. We feel very fortunate to be able to contribute to Puerto Rico’s environmental cause through the ‘Stormwater Garden’ along with natural and social benefits for the community,” said Melissa Maysonet-Andújar, human resources manager for MillerCoors.

Dozens of volunteers were involved in creating the garden, which consisted of several steps. During the event other activities for environmental protection also took place: garbage collection, ecological metrics, sand micro-plastics, mangrove planting and water quality monitoring in adjacent areas of the lagoon. As part of the activity, MillerCoors delivered a donation of $4,000 to the Estuary Program to continue to support their conservation work.

The “Stormwater garden” is a green infrastructure used to improve stormwater management in urban areas. They trap and filter rainwater into the ground before it reaches a water body. It helps remove pollutants, including fertilizers, pesticides, oils, heavy metals or other chemicals that the rainwater washes away from roofs or pavement.
