A taste of Germany is coming to Puerto Rico as Emma’s Famous Old German Pretzels & Bakery Sweets is planning to open its first store in November at the new Plaza Los Palacios Shopping Center in Toa Alta.
This new franchise concept will specialize in a variety of soft gourmet pretzels and European artisan breads, where menu items are guaranteed to be fresh baked and served hot.
Two additional company-owned stores are in the works to open in Toa Baja and Dorado in 2013. Franchises are currently for sale, and founder and President Emma Sánchez announced that they eventually plan to open a total of 10 stores around the island in five years, either through franchisees or the company. The 10 stores are expected to create between 90 and 120 jobs. Each store’s total investment is approximately $200,000.
“We are committed to providing the finest German pretzels and customer service in a friendly, enjoyable, and inviting German atmosphere, which is what will set us apart,” Sánchez said. “Batches of fresh twisted soft gourmet pretzels will be baked before your eyes, as you see how the best pretzels are made from start to finish.”
The pretzels are either covered or stuffed with different coatings or fillings. Customers can choose between flavors such as chocolate, vanilla, guava, Bavarian cream, cream cheese, Oreo, caramel, and many more.
“My pretzels are not like the others. There will be no cinnamon,” she said.
Emma’s Famous Old German Pretzels & Bakery Sweets will also feature a wide selection of European and Italian artisan breads, along with their Bratwurst German sausage in pretzel bread. Baked goods will also include German cakes, original cookies, and sweet bread “Pretzel Rosca” for Christmas, just like a real German bakery.
“I wanted to open a pretzel franchise, and the bakery section of the store was very attractive to me,” Sánchez said. “My grandparents are German, and I wanted to adapt the customs of Germany to Puerto Rico.”
The store will also celebrate annual events such as the famous German “Oktoberfest,” with their unique Bavarian Pretzel, and the National Pretzel Day.
