The Centros Sor Isolina Ferré and the Amgen Foundation announced recently they will join forces to deliver sciences to more than 350 public high school students in low-income communities through its “Ciencia Móvil” mobile lab.

The goal is to provide an interactive educational experience to students and educators in San Juan, Guaynabo, Cataño, Juncos, Humacao and Guayama. The initiative is possible through an investment of more than $40,000 by the Amgen Foundation.

The mobile unit owned by the Centros Sor Isolina Ferré will visit a total of 15 schools and will offer two four-hour workshops in each, for a total of 30 sessions. Each workshop will benefit 12 students and a teacher, covering basic science concepts, general rules for a scientific lab, and experiments related to physics, chemistry and other related disciplines.

“We recognize that not all public schools, especially those located in marginalized sectors, have the resources to have a science lab where students can learn through experimentation,” said Centros Sor Isolina Ferré CEO José Luis Díaz-Cotto.

“Therefore, it is important to bring the ‘Ciencia Móvil’ experience beyond children and young people who attend our centers, expanding the impact of our rolling laboratory,” he said.

The first schools will be visited starting this month. All schools included in the schedule should be covered by december, organizers said.
