Puerto Rican Northrop Grumman engineer gets award

A Puerto Rican Northrop Grumman Corp. mechanical engineer, José Borges, is the recipient of this year’s National Diversity STAR award from the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. The award was presented last weekend during this year’s SHPE National Conference in Indianapolis, Ind., the company announced.
Borges, a senior mechanical engineering project lead at Northrop Grumman’s Laser Systems business unit, was recognized for his commitment to establishing and expanding the influence of employee resource groups and promoting workplace diversity and inclusion.
Since joining Northrop Grumman in 2006, Borges has worked to launch and lead many employee resource groups, including the Hispanic group ADELANTE and Connect1NG, which promotes networking, employee development, engagement and innovation. For three years, he has mentored high school students toward careers in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields through a Northrop Grumman volunteer program, the High School Involvement Partnership.
“José has been actively involved in the Northrop Grumman employee resource groups both at Rolling Meadows, Ill., and here in Apopka,” said Gordon Stewart, vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman’s Laser Systems business unit. “His commitment to furthering the establishment of our ERGs has been effective in communicating Northrop Grumman’s message of diversity and inclusion.”
Borges earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, and an MBA from the University of Phoenix.
