Planning Board approves new green energy projects
The Puerto Rico Planning Board announced over the weekend the approval of a pair of renewable energy projects in the municipalities of Isabela and Morovis that will continue diversifying the island’s energy sources.
The Isabela project is a solar energy farm requiring the installation of 133,560 non-refractive photovoltaic panels, which have the capacity to generate 26.5 megawatts of power. Meanwhile, a second solar energy park will be raised in the town of Morovis, to generate 33.5 megawatts of power.
“With the approval of these projects our administration continues to push the development of renewable energy to cut costs and reduce the environmental impact,” Planning Board President Rubén Flores-Marzán said.
“The use of alternative renewable energy helps reduce dependence on oil as primary energy source of fuel. It also helps to improve air quality and water,” he said.
The agency also announced the approval of an expansion to the “El Coquí” landfill in Humacao, as well as the establishment of a Recovery and Recycling Center, which will extend the life of the landfill by approximately ten years.
