Plaza Las Américas begins new $2M remodeling project

Once finished, the newly redesigned hallway will be used for fashion shows and other events, mall officials said.

With an investment of more than $2 million, Plaza Las Américas, Puerto Rico’s largest mall, will be remodeling the two levels of the corridor between JC Penney and Macy’s. Work will begin next week and is projected to conclude in late October, just before the start of the holiday season, without affecting the operation of the stores in the area, mall officials said.

The area redevelopment includes: removing existing flooring and installing new tiles; changing lamps and luminaires; creating new seating areas with lounge style furniture; installing new decorative and artistic elements; and changing the entrance facing the northern-area multistory parking facility.

“The remodeling will allow this corridor to present consumers with a new face with a personality of its own, different from other areas of the mall, to appeal to customers of the stores located there,” said Franklin Domenech, general manager of Plaza Las Américas.

All of the stores in that hallway will continue to operate as usual, he said.

“We’ve made arrangements with the contractor and the operations group to ensure that all areas are clean and ready to open to the public at the regular time, as the work will be done outside operating hours,” he said.

This project, together with the construction of the stand-alone 45,000 square-foot Sports Authority location outside the mall and the expansion of the shopping center’s North parking will generate a total of 180 jobs, plus those the new store will create. The associated investment is $20 million.

Once complete, the new parking facility — to open in early 2014 — will push the mall’s total number of vehicle spaces to 11,300.
