Polytechnic to host 5th edition of PARK(ing) Day
Local parking spaces were turned into reading and lounging areas, mini-golf courses and other novel curbside entertainment zones.
For the fifth consecutive years, the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico’s Landscape Architects Student Association will host PARK(ing) Day Puerto Rico, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 20, along a stretch of Ashford Avenue in Condado, between the Ashford Presbyterian Hospital and La Concha hotel.
“We are pleased to be, once again, the organizers of this important global event here in Puerto Rico,” said Marisabel Rodríguez, director of the student group.
Originally created in 2005 by Rebar, a San Francisco-based art and design studio, PARK(ing) Day challenges people to rethink the way streets are used and reinforces the need for broad-based changes to urban infrastructure. It also pursues the notion of “generous urbanism,” where instead of taking something to the site where it occurs, the various groups give away something different for one day out of the year.
Over the years, the students have expanded PARK(ing) day event to Caguas, Mayagüez, Ponce and Río Piedras. PARK(ing) DAY takes place in more than 180 cities in 30 countries along six continents worldwide, and is also spread simultaneously through digital media and social networks like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.
The whole event takes place within parking spaces so as not to disrupt vehicular traffic.
