Ponce Catholic Univ. to host Cuba conference
The Cuban government’s recent economic reforms and the growth and development opportunities they represent for the island’s future will be the topic of a conference to be hosted by the Pontifical Catholic University in Ponce, entitled “Cuba Today and Tomorrow: Economic Conditions and Trends.”
Augusta State University Political Science Professor Paolo Spadoni will offer the conference slated for April 3, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the southern university’s “Católica TV” facilities.
Spadoni has a Ph.D. from the Political Science Department at the University of Florida and an MA in Latin American Studies from the Center of Latin American Studies at the University of Florida, and a Laureate in Political Science from the University of Urbino, Italy. Spadoni has been devoted to investigating the Cuban economy and the economic impact the U.S. sanctions against Cuba have caused on the Caribbean island nation.
He is the author of “Failed Sanctions: Why the U.S. Embargo against Cuba Could Never Work,” and recently contributed a chapter about Cuba’s economic reforms to the “Oxford Handbook of Latin American Political Economy.” He also penned an article about the business relationship between Canada and Cuba for the Thunderbird International Business Review. Spadoni is currently working on a book about the Cuban economy.
