The Puerto Rico Hotel & Tourism Association will be hosting its 27th annual convention under the “Tourism, Vital for Economic Growth” theme, Sept. 9-11, organizers announced Thursday.

The convention is considered the hospitality industry’s most important event, said Clarisa Jiménez, executive director of the PRHTA.

“We have designed an educational program with the purpose of stimulating economic growth that consists of various workshops and seminars to polish the participants’ strengths and knowledge in different areas,” Jiménez said. “This year the catalogue includes workshops like ‘Meet the New Tourist,’ ‘Social Media as an extension of the Reservations Department,’ and ‘How to Grow Your Own Business’.”

Meanwhile, organizers said that certifications — six keys to achieving customer service excellence and responsible management of alcohol and food service — needed by industry employees will be offered at the convention.

This year’s convention will feature a mobile application featuring the event’s program, seminars, social events and competitions, among others. The iPhone and Android-ready app can be downloaded at https://event.crowdcompass.com/prhta.

Other highlights of the two-day event are a health fair, a chairman of the Board cocktail and luncheon, when speakers will highlight the trends and solutions for industry’s challenges as well as offer a rundown of the PRHTA’s accomplishments.

Puerto Rico Tourism Co. Executive Rivera Ingrid Rivera will speak Sept. 10 at the “Spotlight on Tourism” luncheon, while the awards luncheon will take place on Sept. 11. All events will happen at the Condado Plaza Hilton hotel.
