Puerto Rico-based Insu Health Design lands $1.2M to scale health tech

Founded by young entrepreneurs, Insu Health Design develops high-performance, scalable and portable cooling solutions.

Insu Health Design, a Puerto Rican startup, has received a $1 million Small Business Innovation Research Phase 2 grant from the National Science Foundation, along with $200,000 in matching funds from the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust.

The combined funding will support the development and commercialization of the company’s precision thermal control system for use in health care and portable refrigeration, the company announced.

“This achievement not only validates years of hard work and perseverance; it also shows that innovation at the highest level can come from Puerto Rico and deliver solutions with global impact,” said Doris Candelaria, co-founder of Insu Health Design.

Founded by young entrepreneurs, the company specializes in high-performance, scalable and portable cooling solutions. Its patented system has attracted interest from multiple industries seeking advanced refrigeration technologies.

The NSF’s Small Business Innovation Research program is highly competitive, with fewer than 15% of Phase 2 proposals awarded nationally. The Science Trust said only a handful of companies in Puerto Rico have secured direct Phase 2 funding in recent years.

“Promoting science- and technology-based companies is key to positioning Puerto Rico as a globally recognized innovation hub,” said Science Trust CEO Lucy Crespo. “The success of Insu Health Design in obtaining a Phase 2 grant from the NSF demonstrates the power of local talent when it has the right support.”
