Puerto Rico hosts 1st NIIMBL biomanufacturing immersion program
The Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust and the National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals have launched the first edition of NIIMBL eXperience@PRSTRT, a fully funded, weeklong biomanufacturing immersion for students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Held during the first week of June, the program welcomes 15 first- and second-year college students, including 10 enrolled in Puerto Rican institutions.
“This is a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the heart of the biopharmaceutical industry,” said Marcos López-Casillas, director of the PRSTRT Research Institute and leader of the initiative.
“Puerto Rico is not only a key player in global biomanufacturing but also a vibrant place where students can gain hands-on experience, build professional networks and explore meaningful STEM careers,” he said.
The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Puerto Rico is one of seven host regions for summer 2025, and the national program has already served 139 students since its inception.
Participants engage in laboratory exercises such as cell culture and protein purification and tour leading companies including Amgen, Lilly and Bristol Myers. They also receive professional development support and mentorship.
The immersive program covers airfare, lodging, meals and materials at no cost to students, who also receive a $1,000 stipend upon completion.
This is the program’s first edition in Puerto Rico, which received the highest number of student applications in the U.S. — underscoring the island’s growing presence as a global biomanufacturing hub.
