AT&T pumps $290M into Puerto Rico network in 3 yrs
AT&T completed significant network upgrades over the past three years.
AT&T said Monday it has invested nearly $290 million in its wireless and wired networks in Puerto Rico between 2012 through 2014, “driving a wide range of upgrades to reliability, coverage, speed and performance for residents and business customers.”
As part of its Project Velocity IP, an investment plan focused on network enhancement and expansion, AT&T in 2014 made network upgrades in Puerto Rico that included 14 new cell sites, 16 new wireless high-speed Internet connections and more than 250 LTE capacity enhancements, the company said.
“With a growing range of connected home appliances, cars and wearable devices, we depend more on network connectivity than ever before,” said Ray Flores, regional vice president for AT&T Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. “AT&T’s continued investment in Puerto Rico brings a host of new, innovative opportunities for residents and businesses to connect with each other and their customers.”
AT&T’s 4G LTE network covers more than 300 million customers in North America, Puerto Rico and the USVI. The carrier AT&T operates an extensive Wi-Fi network including more than 34,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots at restaurants, hotels, bookstores and retailers, and provides access to more than 1 million hot spots globally through roaming agreements.
AT&T competes head-on in Puerto Rico with Claro, T-Mobile, Open Mobile and Sprint.
