Nearly five years after opening as one of the main dining attractions at the Doubletree by Hilton at Gallery Plaza hotel in Condado, restaurant Under the Trees quietly closed its doors Sunday, a decision that was announced on its Facebook página.

Under the Trees has been a popular spot for area residents as well as hotel guests, gaining a positive reputation for its weekend brunch menus. The concept opened in 2009 when local entrepreneur María “Mimi” McCloskey added it to her portfolio of retail establishments that includes the Ponte Fresco soup and salad concept, the Que Pasta pasta bar, Magritte chocolatier and Passion Cakes and Cupcakes.

“On behalf of the entire Under the Trees staff, we want to thank all of our clients for their support over the years. Thanks for visiting us, your positive reviews, those who were fascinated by the ‘Jibarito Burger’ and our famous stuffed avocados,” said a message posted by staffer Alex Chen.

“Today, Sunday, March 16, 2014 is the last day we’ll be open. Come on by for your last shot at brunch, hamburgers or simply, a stuffed avocado,” he said, drawing dozens of comments from Facebook followers who generally expressed sadness over the perhaps unexpected closing.

Aside from its choices of salads, wraps, soups, pastas, sandwiches and burgers, Under the Trees was also known for its nature-inspired anchored by an 18-foot waterfall as well as Ficus trees throughout the restaurant.

Attempts to reach company officials for further details were unsuccessful Sunday. However, NIMB will update this story as more information becomes available.

This is the second time in recent weeks that a popular eatery in the San Juan metro area closes its doors. In early February, retro-modern pizzeria in Miramar, Masafina, called it quits after less than three years in business.
