Puerto Rico’s Center for a New Economy has been included in the seventh annual 2013 Global Go To Think Tanks Report, the most comprehensive ranking of the world’s top think tanks commissioned by the World Bank. The nonprofit ranked 69th among the world’s 80 “think tanks to watch.”

The index, produced annually by the University of Pennsylvania’s Think Tanks and Civil Societies program, which conducts research on the role policy institutes play in governments and civil societies around the world. The Index has become the gold standard for think tanks around the world and is widely cited by governments, donors, journals and policymakers as the foremost profile and performance of think tanks in every region of the world.

The report is compiled with assistance from more than 1,500 peer institutions and experts from the print and electronic media, 9,000 academia, public and private donor institutions, and government employees around the world, as well as more than 6,500 think tanks.

About 30 criteria were used, including the ability of organizations to challenge conventional wisdom, their ability to generate ideas for innovative policy and their role in introducing a new voice in the process of forging public policy.

“It is a great honor that CNE has been identified as one of the featured think tanks as it recognizes the impact our work is having locally and globally,” said CNE President Miguel Soto-Class.

He added that it is also of great pride that Brookings Institution has spent six consecutive years as the number one global think tank in the poll. In 2006, the CNE partnered with Brookings to publish a report with recommendations for restoring economic growth in Puerto Rico.

“In the world filled with tweets and sound bites that are often superficial and politically charged, it is critical to know where to turn for sound policy proposals that address the complex policy issues that policymakers and the public face,” said James McGann, PhD, Director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program. “This Index is designed to help identify and recognize the leading centers of excellence in public policy research around the world.”

The index, which breaks think tank rankings down by region, has been translated into 13 languages including Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish.
