San Juan-based RCMDO Arquitectos is marking more than a decade of work characterized by innovation and focused on Puerto Rico’s social, urban and cultural transformation.

Founded in 2011 by architect Rafael Castro Montes de Oca, the firm has grown into an interdisciplinary model integrating architectural, interior design and urban planning services.

From its early years, RCMDO followed an environmentally conscious approach to its work. Among its first projects were the Taller de Fotoperiodismo and the Centro Residencial de Oportunidades Educativas de Ceiba (Ceiba Residential Center for Educational Opportunities).

“Every project we take on aims for more than just a technical solution — it seeks to generate lasting value for the community,” said Castro Montes de Oca, who leads a team that has expanded its workforce by 50% in the past year.

The firm’s portfolio spans corporate, hospitality and cultural projects, including expansions for Merrill Lynch, designs for Wyndham Grand Río Mar and Fairmont El San Juan Hotel. Its work includes the restoration of landmarks such as the Cuartel de Ballajá and supporting cultural efforts through the Fundación por la Arquitectura (Foundation for Architecture).

RCMDO holds HUBZone and 8(a) certifications from the U.S. Small Business Administration, enabling participation in federal projects and hurricane recovery efforts. Last year, it opened a new headquarters on De Diego Avenue to serve as a hub for collaborative design and its clients.

“Puerto Rico deserves architecture that matches the caliber of its people, its history and its structural needs. RCMDO Arquitectos doesn’t just build spaces — it builds the future,” Castro Montes de Oca said.
