TRB reactivates metals anti-theft interagency committee

Puerto Rico Telecommunications Regulatory Board President Sandra Torres announced Thursday the reactivation of the Interagency Committee against metals theft comprised by more than 10 agencies, the Legislature and telecom companies affected by this crime under Law 53 of 2012.
The agency chief also announced the creation of a website where each participating agency and company will be able to inform on their losses on a monthly basis to “have a clearer picture of how the strategies developed are achieving their goal,” she said.
“We’re reactivating this interagency effort that helps all agencies better understand the problem from all perspectives and find new ways to combat it,” she said.
“It also contributes to raising public awareness of the high impact of metal theft and the millionaire losses it causes,” she said, citing a number of examples of the problem, such as the theft of telephony and fiber optic cables that leave thousands of consumers without service or copper theft from gas cylinders in restaurants and school lunchrooms.
“The TRB has a commitment with citizens to minimize these losses and the problems they represent,” Torres said. “The collaboration of all these agencies has proven to be effective before and this time, through the use of technology and exchange of information, I trust that we will achieve favorable results in a short time.”
