Salvation Army equips 1,000 Bayamón students for new school year
The Salvation Army Puerto Rico hosted its annual “Back to School” event on July 10, distributing backpacks and essential supplies to more than 1,000 children from underserved communities in Bayamón.
The event, held at the Science Park operated by Toro Verde, provided students with school bags stocked with notebooks, pencils, crayons, rulers and pencil cases. Families also enjoyed free access to park attractions and a live performance by children’s group Atención Atención.
“We know that returning to school can represent a financial burden for many families,” said Bersabé Vera, divisional commander for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. “This initiative seeks to ease that weight and ensure that every child has what they need to start the year with dignity, motivation and a smile.”
Toro Verde CEO Jorge Jorge said the company was proud to host the event and support the community. “Toro Verde’s commitment to Puerto Rico is to support anyone in need,” he said.
The Municipality of Bayamón helped identify participants and coordinated with local schools.
“We recognize and appreciate the initiative and commitment of the friends of The Salvation Army,” said Mayor Ramón Luis Rivera.
The organization, which has operated in Puerto Rico for 63 years, currently runs 11 service centers throughout the island.
