San Juan secures $42K grant for museum preservation
The Municipality of San Juan has been awarded $42,076 in federal funding under the Save America’s Treasures Collection Grants program to strengthen preservation efforts at the San Juan Museum.
“Preserving and protecting our artistic heritage is a responsibility to our history and to future generations,” Mayor Miguel Romero said in announcing the grant.
“These federal funds will allow us to strengthen preservation efforts at the San Juan Museum, ensuring that our collections continue to be a source of knowledge, pride and cultural identity,” he said.
The funding will be used to acquire specialized materials and tools for conservation as part of the museum’s Collections Preservation Project. Submitted in December 2024, the proposal was approved this year by the State, Tribal, Local, Plans and Grants program.
The competitive initiative supports preservation projects at cultural institutions across the United States, underscoring the value of San Juan’s artistic legacy.
“This grant represents an essential tool to strengthen the conservation efforts at our museum,” said Víctor Rivera-Flores, director of San Juan’s Department of Art and Culture.
“Each piece we preserve is a testament to the cultural richness of San Juan and Puerto Rico, and with these resources, we can guarantee its protection with the highest conservation standards,” he said.
Romero added that the project is part of a broader effort to reaffirm San Juan’s identity and position it as “a benchmark for cultural conservation and development in Puerto Rico and throughout the region.”
