Seaborne Airlines announced Monday plans to start daily service to its 17th airport, from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan (SJU) non-stop to Cibao International Airport in Santiago, Dominican Republic, starting Mar. 15.

Santiago is Seaborne’s third destination announced within the Dominican Republic, the others being La Romana, which will be expanded from Thursday and Sunday only to daily service starting Mar. 15, and daily service to Punta Cana beginning Feb. 14.

To mark the launch of the new destination, Seaborne is offering fares as low as $99 one way, with taxes and fees included for travel. Bookings must be made by Feb. 28 for travel by Mar. 15 to June 26, 2014.

“The announcement of this new service between San Juan, P.R and Santiago, D.R., definitely represents a big step for the Puerto Rico tourism industry. Seaborne Airlines commitment to increase its services in Puerto Rico strengthens our position as the biggest hub and cruise homeport in the Caribbean and supports the efforts of the government to diversify Puerto Rico as a perfect destination,” said Puerto Rico Tourism Company Executive Director, Ingrid Rivera-Rocafort

Seaborne Airlines also announced it will become the first Caribbean-based airline to allow customers to use cellphones and other portable electronic devices such as e-readers and tablets in an airplane mode from gate to gate with Federal Aviation Administration approval.

Seaborne aircraft have completed carrier-defined tolerance testing to ensure the safe operation of hand-held passenger portable electronic devices during all phases of flight, the company said.
