SJU airport traffic drops 1.9% in July as domestic travel slows
Passenger traffic at Puerto Rico’s main airport declined in July, according to data released by Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR), the operator of Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU, by its airport code) in San Juan through its subsidiary Aerostar Airport Holdings.
Total passenger volume for the month reached 1,381,674, a 1.9% drop from 1,408,958 in July 2024. The decrease was driven by a 3.5% decline in domestic traffic, which fell to 1,176,500 passengers from 1,218,928 a year earlier.
International traffic, however, rose 8% year over year to 205,174 passengers, up from 190,030 in July 2024. While the increase helped offset losses, it was not enough to reverse the overall decline.
Despite the July slowdown, traffic for the first seven months of the year remained positive. From January through July, total passenger volume rose 5.3%, supported by a 4.1% increase in domestic travel and a 14.3% jump in international traffic.
The drop in July comes as ASUR reviews performance across its airport network, which includes facilities in Mexico and Colombia. Puerto Rico was the only region in the group to report a decline in overall traffic for the month.
The dip in domestic travel may reflect shifts in airline scheduling, pricing or broader economic conditions affecting travelers from the mainland United States.
International growth, by contrast, suggests continued interest in Puerto Rico as a destination, particularly for travelers from abroad. Airport officials expect an increase in traffic through September as visitors travel to attend artist Bad Bunny’s 30-show residency at the Puerto Rico Coliseum.
