The Puerto Rico Statistics Institute unveiled Thursday the Puerto Rico Indicators System, a new online tool developed by the government entity to provide access to the island’s most important statistical indicators through a single platform.

In its initial phase the website contains detailed access to some of the 40 most important statistical products for Puerto Rico’s economy, including almost 6,000 statistical indicators on topics such as employment and unemployment, bankruptcy filings by chapters, external trade, passenger movement, production and sales of cement bags, retail, numbers government jobs by agency, among others. The system is expected to expand in other areas, such as health, education, crime and social services over time, Mario Marazzi-Santiago, executive director of the Institute, said.

The Puerto Rico Indicators System was developed in compliance with Open Data principles, which is why the statistics are presented in an accessible way for citizens and programmers to develop web applications.

The system also allows users to create free accounts and create graphs online. No technical knowledge to use or take full advantage of the resource is required, only a computer with Internet access, he said.

The tool includes search for words that allows the user to easily find the statistics.

“The Indicators System is a world-class platform that allows any government entity to make its main statistics accessible via Internet. The only requirement is that they are indicators that can be measured regularly in ‘time series’ format,” he said.

“This may include well-known indicators such as the unemployment rate each of the 78 municipalities posted monthly, or may include other indicators of administrative interest, as the number of positions of trust in each of Puerto Rico’s 200 government agencies,” Marazzi said.

The Indicators System is a tool that helps the Institute fulfill its ministerial duty to promote public access and quick delivery of data produced by government bodies, he said.
