Statistics Institute launches State Data Center-PR portal

Puerto Rico Statistics Institute Executive Director Mario Marazzi.

The Puerto Rico Statistics Institute announced Wednesday the launch of the State Data Center of Puerto Rico sitio web, placing the island on equal footing with U.S. jurisdictions, most of which have their own state and representative portal, agency Executive Director Mario Marazzi said.

Through the new cyber tool users may find the main statistical reports and publications of the U.S. Census Bureau on Puerto Rico, specifically those that are most requested, such as: Annual population estimates; the Puerto Rico Community Survey; and official statistics on the Puerto Rico population and housing census publications.

“Through the State Data Center of Puerto Rico portal we achieve our mission to provide access to the requested data from the U.S. Census Bureau on Puerto Rico in Spanish, while helping to educate on its appropriate use,” said Marazzi, adding the new portal was developed with the Institute’s internal resources and staff in an open source platform.

The website also includes sections containing publications on the Economic Census, the official reference source for statistics on economic activity and size of businesses in Puerto Rico; the Government Census, which provides data on employment, finance and governance structure; and the County Business Patterns, an annual statistical product that presents basic statistics on industry, at the Puerto Rico level. The Institute is also including special publications, such as the “Migrant Profile.”

Meanwhile, the site also includes the “Puerto Rico Population Clock,” which provides a minute-by-minute breakdown of Puerto Rico’s changing population based on projections and other tools such as Municipal Dynamic Graphics, Population Projections, Amercian FactFinder, Census Explorer, and Census Flows Mapper, among others.

The portal also is designed to be easily accessible from mobile phones and to be friendly for less knowledgeable users, Marazzi said.

The State Data Center is a program of the U.S. Census Bureau that is developed in collaboration with state governments and the government of Puerto Rico to facilitate access to and understanding of the statistics produced by the federal entity among local users.

In Puerto Rico, the program consists of a network of about 15 organizations: the Institute, Ana G. Méndez University System (Turabo), InterAmerican University (Aguadilla, Arecibo, Barranquitas, Fajardo, Guayama and San Germán campuses), Dewey University (Mayagüez), the Municipality of Aguadilla, the Pontifical Catholic University (Ponce and Mayagüez), the University of Puerto Rico (Aguadilla, Bayamón, Cayey, Rio Piedras Medical Sciences campuses) and Sacred Heart University.

The program is one of the oldest and most successful in partnership with local jurisdictions, said Marazzi, adding the Institute had headed Puerto Rico’s relationship with the U.S. Census Bureau since 2013.
