Statistics Institute Executive Director Mario Marazzi

The Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Statistics Institute, Mario Marazzi-Santiago announced Monday that he has been appointed to serve as a member of Data Users Advisory Committee of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The DUAC is a committee established by federal law to advise the BLS, from the point of view of data users from various sectors of the economy, including labor, business, research, academic and government, on issues related to the analysis, dissemination and use of BLS statistics and in terms of new statistics needed.

“We appreciate the trust placed by the U.S. Secretary of Labor [Thomas E. Pérez] and the Commissioner of the BLS [Erica Groshen] on the Puerto Rico Statistics Institute. Heading into the 21st century, we must point out the various obstacles everywhere so that people can make the transition from school to reach their full socio-economic development, either through employment or establishing their own business,” Marazzi-Santiago said.

The Committee has the responsibility to provide the BLS Commissioner the priorities of data users; suggestions for adding new programs, changes in the emphasis of programs or removal of existing outdated programs; and advising on possible innovations in data analysis, dissemination and presentation.

The appointment carries no monetary compensation, and has a term of three years, during which it is expected that the 20-members committee will meet twice a year in Washington, D.C.
