When it comes to accepting and staying at a job, Puerto Rican employees value a positive work environment over higher pay, according to some of the results included in the 6th Employment Survey conducted by nonprofits Universia and Trabajando.com this year.

The majority of survey participants, or 59 percent, said they work and stay in places where there is a good professional environment, for several reasons: because they value employees (20 percent); there are enough necessary resources to meet the company’s goals (20 percent); there is a balance between personal and professional life (19 percent); it’s a healthy environment (19 percent); and, there is a possibility for professional development as there is no evident favoritism (8 percent).

Universia.net is a network of colleges in 23 countries in Latin America, while Trabajando.com is labor community formed by an extensive network of partner sites that decided to see what the work environment is like in Puerto Rico companies.

“The work environment is a condition that occurs based on each employee’s contribution of attitudes and skills. Therefore, it is important that each organization dedicates itself to cultivating human resource development to promote behaviors that lead to an excellent working environment,” said José Miguel Justel, general director of Universia Puerto Rico.

The survey involved 433 people of which 62 percent were female and 38 percent male. In terms of age, 63 percent of respondents were over 27 years old, followed by 27 percent between 21 and 26, and finally 10 percent between 18 and 20.

While 76 percent of respondents said they would recommend the company where they work, 24 percent said otherwise. Meanwhile, 55 percent said they would not leave their job for another for equal pay, if the conditions were right.
