T-Mobile doubles local 4G network speeds to 42Mbps

Just seven months after flipping the switch on its 4G network, T-Mobile announced Thursday a $5 million network enhancement that duplicates theoretical peak speeds to 42 megabits per second, over a portion of its footprint in Puerto Rico.
During a midday news conference, T-Mobile General Manager Jorge Martel explained that the faster speeds are now available throughout the extended San Juan metropolitan area — which stretches from Dorado to Río Grande — south to Ponce and west to Mayagüez. Presently, T-Mobile’s 4G network covers 40 percent of the island’s population.
“Since launching the first 4G network in Puerto Rico, we’ve seen how customers have experienced the benefits of having a fast network and broaden their mobile experience,” said Martel. “We continue to innovate and invest in Puerto Rico and for the first time this technology becomes available in this market, offering theoretical speeds up to 42 Mbps,” he said.
Puerto Rico was included among 50 markets where T-Mobile USA began offering the faster service.
Coupled with the speed upgrade, T-Mobile added the Rocket 3.0 USB laptop stick to its portfolio of 4G devices, which includes 11 others. The device is the company’s first 42Mbps capable product.
The Rocket 3.0 manufactured by ZTE is designed to take advantage of T-Mobile’s faster 4G network speeds. Capable of speeds twice as fast as T-Mobile’s previous 4G devices, customers in 42Mbps coverage are expected to experience more consistent 4G speeds when creating and sharing mobile content, streaming and connecting through mobile video, and participating in multiplayer gaming. The USB stick brings three changeable faceplates in cobalt blue, dark violet and matte black.
