Treasury Dept. starts distributing ’12 tax return forms

The Puerto Rico Treasury Department announced Wednesday it has begun the task of distributing 2012 tax booklets, putting close to 80,000 of the short forms in the mail in anticipation of this year’s April 15th filing deadline.
Fernando Rosario, deputy secretary of the Internal Revenue division, said the electronic version of the short form in PDF format has been available for download through the agency’s sitio web since Jan. 22.
The public official further said the agency will begin mailing out long forms today and will upload it to the site Friday.
During the 2011 tax year, 73 percent of tax returns filed at the agency were short forms, while 27 percent were the more complex long form documents. Treasury predicted Wednesday that the number of taxpayers using the short form will surge this year in response to changes to the Internal Revenue Code in 2011.
