Treasury mails 5K taxpayer debt notices

In accordance with the recently approved Law to Strengthen Safety and Public Health, the Treasury Department mailed Thursday 5,000 debt notices and will continue the practice through the rest of the month, agency chief Jesús Méndez said.
So far, Treasury has identified 316,500 taxpayers who are in arrears with the agency.
Under the amnesty program, taxpayers will get the chance to become current with the Treasury Department without being subject to interest, penalty or surcharge payments. The amnesty will be valid through Feb. 29, 2012 and applies to debt accrued through 2010 related to income tax payments, inheritance and donations, and the special property tax.
“Through this initiative not only are we allowing taxpayers to become current before filing the first tax return under the most comprehensive and beneficial tax reform in history, but it also establishes an orderly and transparent process to clean up Treasury’s records,” he said. This is the start of a new era of leaving more money in taxpayer pockets, coupled with a new compliance-oriented culture.”
Taxpayers may also seek a debt certification at the agency’s tax collections offices or through the virtual tax payment system, at http://www.colecturia.pr.gov.
“We urge citizens to take advantage of this unique opportunity to become current with Puerto Rico,” Méndez said.
