Treasury opens taxpayer orientation centers

In preparation for this year’s tax season, the Treasury Department announced Tuesday it has already opened six centers throughout the island to orient taxpayers on the terms of the Law to Strengthen Public Health and Safety and the recently granted tax credit for citizens who are 65 or older.
The centers are located at: Plaza Las Américas (on the second level, inside the former Bathtique); the Capital Center building in Hato Rey; Mayagüez Mall (in front of the Golden Salon); Plaza del Caribe in Ponce (first level, next to the Regis Beauty Salon); the Outlet 66 Mall in Canóvanas (in front of the U.S. Post Office); and the Santa Rosa Mall in Bayamón (first level, next to Banco Popular). The centers will operate from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Because the centers will focus on helping taxpayers in the two specific areas, they should be prepared with the necessary documents prior to going, Treasury Secretary Jesús Méndez said.
In the case of residents who pursue information on the benefits of the Law to Strengthen Public Health and Safety, he recommended that taxpayers take their debt notices with them as well as evidence to support any objection they may have to the amount the Treasury Department calculated is owed.
As for taxpayers who are 65 or older, Méndez urged them to visit the centers to get help determining whether they qualify for the $400 credit available for the first time this year through the Gov. Luis Fortuño administration’s recent Tax Reform.
