Los voluntarios de Triple-S llegan a 3,000 personas mayores en todo Puerto Rico

The program responded to widespread social isolation among older adults and sought to counter its effects through direct, personal interaction.

Triple-S marked International Volunteer Day with an effort that reached 3,000 seniors in all 78 municipalities in Puerto Rico, providing support, music and companionship.

The “Abraza la Isla” initiative deployed 1,000 employee volunteers to day centers and long-term care facilities, a move officials said reflects the company’s focus on the emotional and social well-being of the island’s aging population.

“Given the growing senior population in Puerto Rico and the need to strengthen their emotional and social well-being, this year we significantly expanded ‘Abraza la Isla’ to impact all of Puerto Rico,” said Thurman Justice, CEO of Triple-S.

He said last year’s activities at 65 centers laid the groundwork for this year’s broader outreach. “Companionship is an essential form of care, and we know that loneliness can profoundly affect the physical and emotional health of our seniors,” he said.

The initiative responded to widespread reports of social isolation among older adults and sought to counter its effects through direct, personal engagement.

Lydia Figueroa, executive director of the Triple-S Foundation, said the results highlight the value of community-based models that keep older adults socially connected.

“These findings note the importance of supporting community-based living models where our older adults can remain connected and surrounded by relationships that strengthen their health,” she said.

Volunteers took part in musical and recreational activities and held one-on-one conversations with seniors. The effort was organized by the Triple-S Foundation, the company’s Di Presente Volunteer Program and community partners that coordinated outreach in each municipality.
