Uber adds women-only ride option for drivers in Puerto Rico

Women account for 25% of Uber drivers in Puerto Rico, the highest share in any Latin American market where the company operates.

Uber has introduced a new in-app feature in Puerto Rico that allows female and nonbinary drivers to receive ride requests only from riders who identify as women.

The company said the tool is intended to give drivers more control over how they earn money on the platform and to support a more comfortable driving experience.

“More and more women are choosing the Uber app to generate additional income in Puerto Rico, and we want them to find in Uber a real and accessible economic opportunity, and to feel comfortable every time they go out to drive,” said Manuela Bedoya, security communications manager for Uber in the Andean Region, the Caribbean and Central America.

“This feature is an important step in strengthening their experience on the app and supporting those who are already part of the community,” she said.

Women account for 25% of drivers on the platform in Puerto Rico, the highest proportion of female drivers in any Latin American market where Uber operates. The company said the trend reflects strong interest in flexible earning options and noted that the new tool was developed based on driver feedback.

The feature is optional and can be turned on or off at any time in the Driving Preferences section of the Uber Driver app. Riders and drivers can update their gender information directly in the app.

“We know that when women have tools designed for them, they participate with more confidence, more control and more peace of mind,” Bedoya said. “We want every female driver to feel that Uber is listening to their needs and responding with technology that truly impacts their daily lives.”

The update expands Uber’s existing safety toolkit in Puerto Rico, which includes RideCheck technology, the option to share trip details with trusted contacts, in-app access to 911 and encrypted video recording through the driver’s phone.
