United Airlines marks 20 years of SJ–NY/Newark route

United Airlines is celebrating 20 years of service on the San Juan-New York/Newark route, a service it offers daily between the hubs.
The service between the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan and its New York hub at Newark Liberty International Airport, offers onward connections to cities throughout the Americas and around the world. The flights are operated using Boeing 737-900 aircraft with 154 seats — 20 in United first, 51 economy plus seats featuring additional legroom, and 96 in economy.
United began serving the San Juan-New York/Newark route in 1994 with daily flights using Boeing 727-200 aircraft. In 1999, the airline switched to B737 “New Generation” aircraft, being the first airline on the island to introduce this modern, fuel-efficient and ecofriendly aircraft.
To mark the milestone, United got together with the Puerto Rico Tourism Company and the Municipality of Carolina to hold a celebration at LMM on Thursday.
“We’re very happy to celebrate two decades of San Juan-New York/Newark service,” said Millie Uriarte, United’s director of sales for Latin America and the Caribbean. “We’re grateful to our customers and the travel industry in Puerto Rico, who have made United their preferred airline over the past two decades.”
“At the Tourism Company we enthusiastically join United Airlines’ celebration of 20 years of service between San Juan and Newark. We’re happy to have United as a contributor that facilitates the incoming tourism to Puerto Rico,” said Tourism Company Executive Director Ingrid I. Rivera-Rocafort.
“The airline is a key partner to Puerto Rico, having an increment of 15 percent in their flight offerings and continuously enhancing their routes,” she added.
