The Universidad Central del Caribe was recently selected to receive a grant from the National Institute of Health for its Specialized Neuroscience Research Program of $1.4 million for each of the next three years, with the possibility of extending the financial assistance to five years, the school announced this week.

The funding for the SNRP program, headed by professor Maria Bykhovskaia, will come specifically from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a division of the NIH.

The college’s unique research program offers training in neuroscience research and career development guidance for faculty, graduate students, medical students, and undergraduates. The program integrates basic and translational neuroscience research focused on neuronal signaling, collaborations with top mainland universities, first-rate mentoring for junior faculty and research training for students, and career development guidance for students in an environment that fosters communication between future scientists and future health professionals.

“Through our research at the neuroscience department, we contribute to the development of new knowledge in this discipline that supports basic science and knowledge that is transferable to medical applications and health,” said José Ginel Rodríguez, Universidad Central del Caribe president.

With the funding, the University will develop new research on neurological disorders (stroke), learning and memory. In addition, each year the neuroscience program will increase the number of graduate students participating in this research, so that they can interact with professionals of the best research institutions on the U.S. mainland.
