Visa sees 15% spike in transactions during Holy Week ’25 in Puerto Rico

Consumer payment trends in Puerto Rico continue shifting toward mobile and tap-to-pay technologies, reflecting broader changes in shopper behavior.

Consumer transactions in Puerto Rico rose during Holy Week 2025, according to data from Visa, reflecting wider adoption of digital payment methods and continued strength in the island’s tourism and retail sectors.

The company’s consulting unit, Visa Consulting & Analytics, reported that total transactions made with Visa payment methods increased by about 15% compared to the same holiday period in 2024.

“The transactional data from Visa during Holy Week 2025 highlights the rapid expansion of digital payment ecosystems and growing demand for seamless, borderless payment experiences from travelers, shoppers and local merchants,” said Javier Vázquez, director of Visa Consulting & Analytics for Latin America and the Caribbean.

The data, collected through VisaNet from April 13 to 20, excluded Visa Direct transfers and was compared with the corresponding week in 2024.

Visa also reported a 60% surge in contactless payments, indicating a growing consumer preference for mobile and tap-to-pay technologies. Debit card usage rose more than 15%, while credit card transactions increased by nearly 10%, pointing to steady consumer confidence.

Cross-border transactions — a key indicator of international tourism — were up more than 10% year-over-year, further supporting signs of a tourism recovery.

Visa said the results reflect broader shifts in consumer behavior and align with its strategy to support Puerto Rico’s digital economy through innovative payment tools and commercial partnerships.
