The W Retreat & Spa in Vieques has been named among the world’s top 10 poshest resorts by the World Luxury Association, which ranks the globe’s most lavish brands in diverse areas such as aircraft, yachts, cars, jewelry, watches, fashion, liquor, cosmetics and resorts.

In a release issued Thursday, the WLA unveiled its “World’s Top 100 Most Valuable Luxury Brands” list that placed the Vieques hotel among such exclusive accommodations as the Wakaya Club and the Hotel Turtle Island in Fiji, the North Island and the Fregate Island Private in the Seychelles, the Hotel Le Toiny in St. Barts, the Burj Al-Arab and the Armani Hotel in Dubai, the Le Sirenuse in Italy, and the Amanruya in Turkey.

The five-star, $138 million W Retreat & Spa Vieques Island hotel opened in March 2010, with the expectation of drawing some of the world’s most demanding tourists to the island municipality of Vieques.

The sprawling 157-room, 65-suite resort sits on a pristine beachfront property and features high level artistic design and amenities such as luxurious open terraces dotted with sofas and colorful signature chairs, plush landscape of sea grass, climbing vines and scented trees, in pool with complete a dipping pool with lounge chairs inside of it, and a 6,000-square foot Away Spa, with more than 60 beauty and health treatments.

The W's pool area overlooks the Atlantic.

Last year, the hotel had some 65,000 confirmed guests, including numerous celebrities who have selected the boutique hotel to spend their vacations or mark a special occasion.

The WLA is currently the world’s largest luxury brands research and management international nonprofit organization and is focused on the international luxury market — luxury brands, services and consumers — and specializes in luxury brand management, market research, brand intellectual property protection, consumer arbitration, trade promotion and government affairs.

The “Most Valuable Luxury Top 100” list is considered the “Luxury Oscar Awards,” and is based on luxury brand’s influence on a global scale, market share, consumer feedback and other composite scores — for the world’s most credible rankings. This year’s event took place in Beijing, a market the WLA said has become the world’s largest consumer of luxury goods.
