Walmart sends moms back to school

Aware of the important role education plays on the island’s well-being, Walmart Puerto Rico announced the launching of a new educational initiative through which it will select 10 mothers who have not finished high school, to help them get their diploma.
Through the “Mamá vuelve al salón” (“Mom goes back to the classroom”) initiative, the retailer seeks to help these mothers get back on track and make their way into the job market. Aside from helping the women get their diploma, Walmart will also support them in their professional development.
“We want to give a chance to women who for one reason or another could not complete their high school studies and be a facilitator of the process so they can achieve it,” said Viviana Mercado, corporate affairs manager of Walmart Puerto Rico. “This program is in line with our commitment to promote education and job training, two pillars for Walmart, a company with high sense of social responsibility.”
Those interested in participating should sign up through Walmart’s Facebook página, where aside from submitting their personal data, the women should also submit a short story saying why they want to excel and finish high school.
The winners will receive the necessary learning materials, and must comply with Education Department guidelines to receive their diploma. Upon “graduating,” Walmart will gift each one of them with a tablet computer.
The contest will run through July 30.
