Frontier Airlines adding P.R. to its footprint in June

Low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines will begin flying to the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport for the first time starting June 11, 2017, Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló announced Tuesday.

The flights will arrive from the Orlando International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport. Frontier, based in Denver, Colorado, will operate daily flights to both destinations on Airbus A321 aircraft, which have a maximum capacity of 230 passengers.

The flight to Orlando will run during the full year, while the flight to Philadelphia will initially run for 10 months with the expectation that it will expand to the full year. Frontier becomes the second airlines to fly the San Juan-Philadelphia route and the fifth to connect San Juan and Orlando.

It is estimated that the combined new Frontier flights will bring more than 110,000 visitors to the island, whose annual economic impact will exceed $21.6 million, the government stated.

“The arrival of Frontier Airlines to the Luis Muñoz Marín Airport is great news. Today’s announcement is definitely another step forward for Puerto Rico, and clearly conveys our message that we are open for business,” Rosselló said.

“This shows that Puerto Rico is gaining credibility among investors and companies like Frontier, which have decided to do business on the island,” he said. “We welcome Frontier to Puerto Rico and we appreciate its trust in our island as a destination.”

Frontier, recognized as an “ultra-low cost” airline, operates flights to more than 65 domestic and international destinations. It currently has a fleet of 66 aircraft, which it plans to expand to 120 by 2021.

“Our network continues expanding into markets where people want to fly,” said Josh Flyr, Frontier’s vice president of route planning. “And customers in these two new markets to Puerto Rico now have a new, low-cost alternative.”
