The Old San Juan piers were bustling with activity Wednesday, with the arrival of five cruise ships.

A rare event took place Wednesday when five cruise ships with more than 15,000 passengers aboard docked at the Port of San Juan, said Ports Authority Executive Director Víctor Suárez.

The cruise ship parade began at 6 a.m. and lasted throughout the day when the Disney Fantasy, the Nieuw Amsterdam, the MCS Poesía, the Independence of the Seas and the Carnival Glory dropped anchor at the piers. The economic impact of those arrivals was estimated at about $3 million.

“It had been a while since the Port of San Juan looked as good as it did today,” said Suárez. “It’s nice to see the docks and the capital city packed full of tourists. This event is the beginning of the increase expected for the island regarding the cruise industry in 2014.”

“What is seen is the result of the efforts we’re carrying out to make our port the most attractive in the Caribbean,” he concluded.
