P.R. to host ICANN’s 61 public hearing in March ’18

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers board has approved Puerto Rico as the location in North America to host ICANN’s 61st public meeting to be held Mar. 10-15, 2018.

ICANN had originally planned to hold its annual meeting on the island this year, but changed its location to India prompted by the Zika scare. Puerto Rico Top Level Domain, the entity in charge of the .pr domain, made the announcement late last week.

PRTLD will host the event that is expected to draw more than 3,000 representatives from more than 100 countries to discuss various topics on the dynamic Internet industry, technology issues and the world of web domain names.

“We are very pleased to host this important meeting, and we will begin working immediately to ensure that the congress is a success,” said Oscar Moreno, president of the organization.

ICANN holds three public meetings each calendar year in different regions of the globe. ICANN Meetings are a central principle of ICANN’s multi-stakeholder model because they provide a venue for progressing policy work, conducting outreach, exchanging best practices, conducting business deals, interacting among members of the ICANN community, including Board and staff and learning about ICANN.

Usually comprised of more than 400 different sessions, these meetings are the focal point for individuals and representatives of the different ICANN stakeholder groups to introduce and discuss issues related to ICANN policy. Participants may attend in person or remotely. Meetings are open to everyone and registration is free.

“ICANN congresses always have a very positive economic impact in the countries where they are held, because of the number of people who attend, buy and explore the offerings of the host destinations. We expect this event to contribute to the visitor’s economy and commerce in general,” said Pablo Rodríguez, vice president of PRTLD, who has been selected to ICANN’s ccNSO council, to support the organization and its administrators on a global level.

As part of this designation, Rodríguez will be the councilor in charge of representing the North American region until 2019.

The ccNSO Council is a platform that seeks to foster consensus, exchange of information and cooperation for the development of best practices between countries. Likewise, this working group has the responsibility of developing and recommending global policies to the ICANN Board.

In 2007 Puerto Rico hosted a similar meeting, becoming the first ICANN meeting held throughout the Central American and Caribbean region attended by more than 800 people at that time.
