AT&T on Thursday granted Aspira Puerto Rico nearly $200,000 to help it continue its mission of improving the quality of life and enhancing socio-economic development through holistic education and leadership development in Puerto Rico.

ASPIRA Puerto Rico has been named as one of 30 recipients nationwide that will share in nearly $12.5 million from AT&T’s Aspire program, the carrier announced.

“AT&T’s community investments are driven by the goal of getting students prepared to succeed in the future,” said Ray Flores, regional vice president, AT&T Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. “ASPIRA Puerto Rico has a similar mission and that’s why we’re so pleased to support their efforts to help students advance successfully from middle school through postsecondary and beyond.”

Through a competitive request for proposal process, 30 schools, school districts and non-profits, including ASPIRA Puerto Rico, were selected from more than 1,100 nationwide. Programs were evaluated based on their effectiveness in helping students graduate ready for career or college. Selected programs use evidence-based approaches to serve students and are able to demonstrate quantitative results.

“I would like to thank AT&T for their generous donation of almost $200,000 to support after school programs. Programs like ASPIRA not only provide a safe place for students after school, but also the resources and support so that they can graduate ready to pursue college or a career, a goal that is aligned with the Departments’ priorities,” said Harry Valentin, Puerto Rico’s deputy secretary of Education.

AT&T’s Aspire Program will assist 225 underserved youth from three high schools in the municipalities of Canóvanas and Juncos. Participants will have three hour weekly workshops in topics like self-esteem, effective communication, family dynamics, leadership, decision-making, goal setting, planning for academic success, cultural awareness, critical thinking, study habits, budgeting, and financial aid for post-secondary studies, and many others.

Students visit universities and other post-secondary institutions, and receive tutoring services. A chapter of ASPIRA Leadership Clubs will be organized in each school.
