Agricultural reserves must have current or future farming potential, the Planning Board says.

The Puerto Rico Planning Board recently adopted the Añasco Valley Agricultural Reserve, which spans more than 7,000 acres between Añasco and Mayagüez and carries significant potential for farming development, agency President Luis García-Pelatti said.

“The Añasco Valley’s special delimitation and zoning makes it the first agricultural reserve that is identified as such on the Planning Board’s initiative,” García-Pelatti said, noting that 94.4 percent of the 7,000 acres are already classified as having “high agricultual value.”

“We must conserve and preserve our agricultural land for its agricultural potential to develop agro-industrial projects that allow us to have food security for any contingency,” he concluded.
