The 9th edition of the “Best Employers in Puerto Rico” annual survey revealed that one trait that sets them apart is how they manage their human resources, keeping track of why an employee was hired and evolving constantly to reward those who meet their standards and expectations.

This year’s list of 16 companies compiled by human resources firm Aon Hewitt represents the best to meet those criteria. In the large company category, the winners are: (1) Bella International, (2) T-Mobile Puerto Rico, (3) MMM Holdings Inc., (4) Hewlett Packard Puerto Rico, and (5) Eaton Corporation PR Operations.

In the mid-sized company category, the list of winners reads as follows: (1) Starbucks Coffee Puerto Rico, LLC, (2) Laboratorios Borinquen, (3) Monsanto Caribe LLC, and (4) Cooperativa de Seguros Múltiples de Puerto Rico.

And rounding out the ranking are seven small companies representing a variety of sectors: (1) Basf Agricultural Products de Puerto Rico, (2) DHL Supply Chain, (3) Assurant Solutions Puerto Rico, (4) Toyota de Puerto Rico, (5) L’Oreal Caribe, (6) GE Appliances Caribbean & Co., and (7) Kraft Foods Puerto Rico LLC.

“The Best Employers don’t work just to retain their best talent by using practices such as internal surveys to measure their commitment, or engagement, programs to develop key talent and keep open and transparent communication, but they also manage these practices in an integrated way, focused on providing a constantly evolving environment where results are measured and the employee is rewarded to meet established goals,” said Vanessa Rodríguez, leader of Aon Hewitt’s talent and organizational effectiveness practice.

This year, the selection was divided into three categories according to the company’s size: large, with 400 employees or more; medium, consisting of 151 to 399 employees; and small, whose workforce is less than 150 employees.

“These companies know that it is equally important to remain attractive to new talent, therefore, are constantly using tools such as surveys of wages and benefits to work their attraction and retention strategies, making sure to remain competitive in the marketplace,” Rodríguez added.

The “Best Employers” succeed in applying all of those tools in an integrated manner in all human resources processes, whether external candidates (81 percent of “Best Employers,” vs. 61 percent, other companies) or internal (88 percent of “Best Employers.”)

It was also clear from this year’s survey that for 88 percent of the “Best Employers,” skills are key elements in all processes, from interviewing the candidate and their selection, to the process of “on boarding” and finally in their training and development, said Aon Hewitt, which has been conducting the study since 1998.
