Sacred Heart Univ. gets $150K for new scholarship fund

Sacred Heart University announced Wednesday the receipt of a $150,000 gift from Ashton Soniat and his wife Lauren to establish the perpetual Robert Soniat Fund to provide scholarships to outstanding students with financial need.

Ashton Soniat is the son of Robert Soniat and founder and chief executive of Duffosat Capital Puerto Rico, a company dedicated to energy investment management. Soniat is one of the businessmen that recently relocated to Puerto Rico thanks to the incentives under Laws 20 and 22.

“We reaffirm our family commitment to higher education in Puerto Rico. University students need support from the private sector, especially from those who are so warmly received by the local community, as has been the case with our family,” Soniat said, who visited the University and shared his experiences with several students holding scholarships.

University President Gilberto J. Marxuach, said the college community is very grateful to the Soniat family for such an important contribution and for supporting exceptional students with financial need who excel in leadership and social commitment.

“In [Sacred Heart,] we firmly believe that income should not be an obstacle for talented students who want to study here,” Marxuach said. “We’re grateful to the Soniat Family for believing in the mission of our University in educating individuals committed to building a better Puerto Rican society based on justice and peace.”

This contribution will strengthen the Sagrado Exceptional Student Fund scholarship program, also known as the FEE Scholarship, which has helped more than 700 students since established it 23 years ago by Sister Socorro Juliá Fernández, Emeritus Dean of Development and member of the Board of Trustees of the University, and a group of local business leaders.
