SBA District Director José Sifontes

José Sifontes, who held the post of U.S. Small Business Administration District Director for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, José Sifontes, passed away Dec. 28, the agency announced Monday.

Sifontes, a long-time champion of the small- and mid-sized business sector in Puerto Rico and the neighboring U.S. territory, was a close collaborator for News is my Business, as well as other island publications.

The agency has named Ana Matilde del Toro on an interim basis to the position he held since October 2007.

Sifontes was responsible for delivering the agency’s financial assistance, management counseling, business development and minority enterprise development activities throughout the islands in his footprint.

“Throughout his career, Sifontes has been a long standing champion of small and minority owned business interests in New York, New England, Latin America and the Caribbean and has initiated and supported significant outreach and small business development efforts,” the SBA said in a bio posted on its website.
