Spanish fashion retailer Massimo Dutti to open 1st store in P.R., Caribbean

Massimo Dutti is known for its high-quality garments that combine natural fabrics, subtle textures and innovative blends.

Spanish fashion retailer Massimo Dutti will be opening its first store in Puerto Rico at the Plaza Las Américas shopping center in Hato Rey, marking its foray into the island and the Caribbean region, News is my Business learned.

The store will be located in a 6,070 square-foot space at the mall’s first level, adjacent to Michael Kors and across from La Favorita and BCBG. It should be open by Christmas, mall officials said.

“We’re continue expanding our fashion mix in Plaza with this new store that brings internationally recognized quality and prestige,” said Rafael Ruiz-Comas, corporate leasing director for Plaza Las Américas.

“The experience with [Spanish fashion retailer] Zara here at Plaza has been so positive that it opened the doors for Inditex to approve the opening of two new stores in Puerto Rico: a Zara in Plaza del Caribe in Ponce and a Massimo Dutti in San Juan, in the same year,” he added.

The European retailer began scouting the island late last year, when it incorporated as Massimo Dutti Puerto Rico Inc. So far, the process of establishing its local presence includes seeking out store managers and fashion associatesto staff the future store.

Construction of its new space at Plaza las Américas will begin in coming days, calling for the relocation of Bakers and Specs.

Founded in 1985, Massimo Dutti is owned by Spain’s Inditex group. The retailer specializes in men’s, women’s and children’s clothes — ranging from sophisticated, high-end, to easygoing casual wear — as well as perfumes. It has some 542 stores in more than 45 countries worldwide.

Multiple attempts to reach Massimo Dutti spokespeople in Spain have been unsuccessful thus far. However, a source that spoke on the condition of anonymity confirmed to this media outlet that the first store will be located at the Empresas Fonalledas-owned mall.

The European retailer is known for its high-quality garments that combine natural fabrics, subtle textures and innovative blends.

Puerto Rico’s future store will join nearly two-dozen other locations that Massimo Dutti has opened worldwide so far this year.
